The classification of parenting styles is based on two criteria: Demandness and Responsiveness.
The Demandness refers to the expectations and discipline that parents demand from their children. This includes setting of goals, rules and visions for the child. This refers to how demanding are parents when it comes to expectations from kids. Obviously these are good standards and behaviors that we want our kids to exhibit but they must be measurable.
The responsiveness refers to the parent capabilities and willingness to respond to the demands. Is the parent responsible for good behavior of the child? Is the parent helping the child to meet the demands he has set up? The parent shows commitment, compassion, love to support the child. Are you competent and skillful enough to provide inputs and resources to help your kid achieve an outcome?
Some parents exhibit high demand and high responsiveness while others exhibit high demand and low responsiveness, some also low demand and high responsiveness and others low demand and low responsiveness, making 4 parenting styles.
