Concept of Parenting

Tip 21: A is for Antecedents in ABC Parenting

Antecedents are things we say and do to increase occurrence of positive behaviors in our children: the events, action(s), or circumstances that occur immediately before a behavior. It can be anything that triggers the given behavior. Environments, social settings, and even specific topics of conversation or word choices can drive someone to initiate a behavior, even without realizing it. If you are attempting to trigger a positive outcome, you might manipulate the antecedents in the situation to foster certain desired behaviors instead. So love is a powerful antecedent.

Let us consider the popular statement “If you love me keep my commandments” in the Bible. The phrase ‘if you love me’ is Antecedent of the behavior ‘keep my commandments’. The more love that you show towards your kids the more compliance you get. Be more positive towards your kids.
