Based on scientific research, there are many frameworks of parenting and ABC Parenting is one of them. The ABC stands for Antecedents (A), Behavior( and Consequences(C). The Antecedents refer to what normally happens before Behavior occurs. The behavior is about actions of the child towards others and himself. The consequences connote what happens after the behavior.
The way parents deliver messages to children comes under Antecedents. Therefore, in child rearing, parents must work on themselves.
When there is a compliance or non compliance from the child, what a parent will do falls under consequences. Therefore compliance (when the child obeys) consequences involve some rewards such as praise, points while non compliance consequences may include ignoring, time out and mild punishment.
Kwabena, can you please do your homework? (Antecedents). The use of the word ‘please’ and asking him makes the statement a good Antecedent
The child does the homework (Behavior Compliance)
The parent says ‘Good job for doing your homework. Then a pat at the back.’ (Consequences)
We shall go through some techniques under A, B and C in the coming weeks.
