1. Decide on the behavior you want to decrease. For example, I want my child to stop insulting.
2. Decide on the positive behavior you will want replace the negative behavior. This is called positive opposite. I want my child to speak politely
3. Decide on how you will reward the replacement behavior using praise, attention or points
4. Reinforce the positive opposite with more praise or points. The more you praise the positive opposite the more you eliminate that negative behavior
5. Decide on the punishment that can be used. Keep mild and brief punishment such as time out, taking away a privilege. Don’t take away activity for too long, like weeks, but day or two will be okay. Avoid impromptu punishment.
6. Make sure that the instances of praise far outweigh the instances of punishment. If you give 2 time outs, offer 4 praises.
